The Gap Sports Fields Receive $165,000 make-over

07 September, 2007

THE GAP’S hugely popular sports fields at Walton Bridge Reserve are about to receive a major upgrade thanks to a $165,000 funding boost by Brisbane City Council.

Local Councillor Geraldine Knapp said Lord Mayor Campbell Newman had allocated the money in this year’s budget so that remediation work could be carried out on the fields.

“Hundreds of kids use The Gap Pastime fields every weekend for soccer and other sporting competitions so it’s wonderful to see the money going towards such an important community facility,” Cr Knapp said.

“The prolonged drought and high number of kids playing sport each week have taken their toll on the fields, so it’s great to see this money going towards upgrading the ground so that our local kids will still have a wonderful venue to play on in years to come.”

Cr Knapp said the upgrade to The Gap sports field had been listed as a priority under the Lord Mayor’s $2.2 million Sports Fields Remediation Program.

Treasurer of The Gap Pastime Club, Glenys Wilkinson, said the funding was wonderful news, and would mean a great deal to the hundreds of children who play sport there every weekend.

“It means an awful lot to us because we’ve been trying to save for ages. Councillor Knapp has certainly been a great supporter of the club and we’re very grateful for her efforts in securing this money,” Mrs Wilkinson said.

Cr Knapp said the remediation work, which included re-levelling and compacting the ground.

The Gap sports fields are located at Walton Bridge Reserve, 25 Glen Affric Street, The Gap.
