Lord Mayor presents Brisbane’s 2007 photographic awards

05 December, 2007

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has praised the quality of entrants to his 2007 Photographic Awards, which this year explored Brisbane’s fight against climate change.

The Lord Mayor announced the winners in an awards ceremony today (Friday, 30 November) as he launched the Museum of Brisbane’s Shifting Focus exhibition, featuring award winners and runners up.

Cr Newman said it was apt the awards were finalised just weeks into his GreenHeart CitySmart environmental campaign.

"When we look back 20, 30 years from now we’ll realise this was a defining time.  Shifting Focus will capture how we turned the city round – driving sustainable ways to preserve the environment,” he said.

Cr Newman said the entries were of a high standard and showed Brisbane people were working hard to make Australia’s fastest growing capital city its greenest city.

The awards attracted more than 100 entries and were judged by a panel including Lord Mayor Campbell Newman, The Courier-Mail’s Derek Moore, Network 10’s Amanda Fitzgerald and Museum of Brisbane Director, Peter Denham.

Cr Newman said the photos were imaginative, thoughtful and diverse, and featured a range of subjects from chickens to water tanks to recycling bins.

“I want to congratulate all the photographers here today and wish them well both in their art and spreading the GreenHeart CitySmart message,” he said.

“Their work is now being shown in a major museum exhibition here at Museum of Brisbane and will be seen by over 50,000 visitors.”

Visitors to the Shifting Focus exhibition can also vote for their favourite entry in The Courier-Mail’s People’s Choice Award.

The 2007 Lord Mayor’s Photographic Awards and Shifting Focus exhibition are supported by Network 10, ourbrisbane.com and The Courier-Mail.
