Eleven schools selected for travel safety program

20 January, 2008

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has announced that safety around 11 Brisbane schools will be improved as part of Safe School Travel (SafeST) program, after the list passed through Civic Cabinet this morning.

The joint Brisbane City Council and State Government SafeST program aimed to improve safety conditions for students and pupils around Brisbane schools.

Cr Newman said the State Government subsidised the construction of bus, pedestrian and cyclist drop off facilities at Brisbane schools to the tune of 50 per cent.

“The safety of our children is of paramount importance and I am sure the State Government will recognise this when they consider this list,” he said.

“These schools have been selected based on feedback from those who know best – the school communities themselves.

“They’ve been able to demonstrate that these improvements to the infrastructure around these schools will improve safety conditions for children.”

Cr Newman said the 11 schools had been assessed on Main Roads criteria for SafeST projects, which took into account accident history, school population, speed limits and community concern, among other criteria.

Cr Newman said $1.13m worth of capital works had been identified, of which the State Government would be asked to provide $565,000.

The 11 schools that would benefit from the SafeST program in 2009-10 were:
