The road project Labor does not want you to know about

30 January, 2008

LORD Mayor Campbell Newman will today inspect another multi-million dollar local road project that will be freeing up traffic congestion within months.

The Lord Mayor will visit the $50 million Hamilton Road upgrade, a major plank in this year’s $233 million worth of road projects designed to improve traffic in the suburbs.

The upgrade of Hamilton Road will allow traffic to travel east to west from the suburbs of Chermside to McDowall without diversions and significant delays.

It was an election promise four years ago and will shortly join the list of other big-ticket suburban road initiatives completed recently, such as the $26 million upgrade of Pickering St at Alderley and the $30 million Boundary-Kelliher road project at Darra.

“These are the projects that Labor does not want you to know about,” Cr Newman said.

“They like people to think I am all about tunnels when in fact I am spending $233 million on local road projects to ease traffic congestion in the suburbs.

“Its strange that Labor in council never talk about this project, or the removal of the Alderley roundabout.

“It is like they don’t want you to know that I am getting on with the job of improving roads such as Wynnum Road, Scrub Road, Meadowlands Road, Blunder road and Boundary Road to name a few.

“I have managed to get these projects going in three years. Imagine what I can accomplish if I have a Liberal team supporting me in City Hall rather than a bunch of Labor spoilers.”

Cr Newman said the Hamilton Road upgrade included a fauna bypass so animals could run through a green corridor rather than cross the road.

He said that recent wet weather had not delayed the project, which was due to open around the end of March.

“It’s great to see the fauna initiatives such as the underpass at Little Cabbage Tree Creek and the fauna land bridge that will link the Milne Hill Reserve with the Raven Street Reserve.”

The Hamilton Road Upgrade project commenced in November 2006 and involved constructing the missing section of Hamilton Road through The Chermside Hills Reserve, plus upgrades to the existing section of Hamilton Road from Trouts Road and Whites Road.

“Bus services will resume using Hamilton Road when the road is opened, with a new timetable due out in the coming months,” the Lord Mayor said.
