More Funding for Local Roads

05 July, 2008

Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has committed $137.6 million over four years for roads resurfacing across the city – in a sign that local roads funding is unaffected by his $1.2 billion Road Action! plan.

Cr Newman today moved to assure critics of his budget that he would continue to provide the standard services that people required, in addition to addressing traffic congestion.

“Under my leadership, Council is embarking on the most ambitious expansion of the road network ever seen in this city, but we’re not forgetting our existing roads,” he said.

“That’s why I am announcing a raft of business-as-usual maintenance measures – in addition to the Road Action! program – to deliver for the motorists of Brisbane.”

The Lord Mayor said $10.85 million would be spent this term on traffic calming in suburban streets that will benefit from slower traffic, making them safer for children and adults alike.

A further $20.3 million will be spent on traffic lights over the next four years.

The Lord Mayor said $8.5 million would be allocated to kerb and channel replacement, plus $1.65 million spent annually on traffic line markings on Brisbane roads.

Almost $5 million will be spent in conjunction with the State Government in improving safety around schools for students and teachers through the Safe School Travel program which builds bus, pedestrian and cycle facilities in key areas of community concern.

Another $2 million will be spent on safety fencing during the term.

“Our approach to Brisbane’s traffic is more than tunnels and major roads – it’s about an all-of-Brisbane approach to ensure our entire road network is as safe and efficient as possible,” Cr Newman said.

“While my TransApex vision is becoming a reality, the importance of a fully operational local road network in relieving traffic congestion can not be underestimated.”
