Making Suburbs Sparkle

09 July, 2008

LORD Mayor Campbell Newman is adding more sparkle to Brisbane’s suburbs with a $5.7 million plan to improve council services.

Called Neighbourhood Plus! the program will see dramatically increased mowing and sweeping services across Brisbane, and increased litter patrols in the suburbs.

Under Neighbourhood Plus! council will increase the regularity of grass mowing along major roads and in major parks from 12 times a year to 16 times a year.

Mowing in minor parks will increase from 10 times a year to 12 times a year.

The Lord Mayor has doubled street sweeping services across Brisbane at a cost of $1.24 million. Now every street will be swept clean twice a year.

“This is about upping the level of service that council provides the community,” Cr Newman said.

“I am proud of Brisbane and I bet other people feel just like me. I want to add some sparkle to Brisbane’s suburbs and celebrate our city with a renewed focus on neighbourhoods.”

The Lord mayor said local communities would soon be able to vie for the title of Brisbane’s ‘Spotless Suburb’ as part of a Tidy Towns-style competition held in conjunction with Keep Australia Beautiful.

In a bid to keep suburbs cleaner, the Lord Mayor would expand Brisbane’s successful CBD anti-litter program into the outer suburbs at a cost of $350,000.

Another $1.8 million will be spent on litter prevention in the inner city and Fortitude Valley.

Cr Newman also increased the number of anti-graffiti squads in Brisbane from seven to 10 this financial year. There were just four squads before Cr Newman was elected.

He said council would keep a close eye on parks and major roadsides, and encouraged the public to phone if they saw overgrown parks.

“Brisbane has over 2000 parks which cover 13,700 hectares and they are a haven for families and friends,” Cr Newman said.

“I want to make sure our parks are a place where families can enjoy themselves and undertake the sort of safe outdoor activities my family enjoys.”
