E-Waste Collection of the Year

24 July, 2008

Brisbane City Council will hold the first e-waste collection of the year this weekend, announced Environment Parks and Sustainability Chair Peter Matic.

Council has quadrupled collections from once to four times a year, as part of an election commitment to reduce hazardous toxins released into the environment, and reuse valuable e-material.

Cr Matic said this weekend Council wanted discarded laptops, keyboards, mobile phones, stereos and any other electronic equipment people do not want - for recycling.

“Last year we collected a massive 181 tonnes – and this year we want to do even better, diverting more e-waste away from our landfill,” he said.

“There are six locations across the city for people to drop off the electronic gear they would otherwise throw away.

The two-day event on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 July gives residents the opportunity to recycle e-waste responsibly at no charge.

“We’re asking residents, businesses and schools to gather it all up rather than dumping it in wheelie bins,” Cr Matic said.

E-waste contains a range of toxins including lead and mercury which are hazardous to humans and the environment.

“We want to protect Brisbane’s natural environment by reducing the toxins leaching out into the ground from landfill - and by reusing valuable resources,” Cr Matic said.

Over 90 per cent of unused mobile phones can be recycled and 95 per cent of computers and televisions.

Council thanks Apple and Sims|E-Recycling for making this event possible.
