The Gap 2 NHW
The Gap 2 NHW: this is the Neighbourhood Watch program and police codename for what its members decided, when it was formed in 1994, to call Kestrel Watch. Kestrel’s area is bounded by Waterworks Road, Enoggera Creek (that is, in the main, Yoorala Street) and School Road. This natural enclave fits the NHW ideal of an area comprising about 600 households, a grouping suitable for the engendering of a “good neighbour” spirit. The Watch area is divided into six zones, each led by a Zone Coordinator who is aided by a team of Block Coordinators who in turn maintain contact with a small group of neighbours, usually six to a dozen living nearby. The whole operation is overseen by the Area Coordinator, elected at Kestrel’s annual general meeting. The need for volunteers is mainly for the positions of “Blockies”. The work is not arduous. The main physical effort is in distributing newsletters to members once a month. In the unlikely event of an accident while carrying out that duty, the blockie is covered by CGU insurance (one benefit of having CGU as sponsor). Kestrel holds bimonthly meetings in The Gap State Primary School staffroom, to which all members are invited (all residents in the area are members unless they request otherwise). The next 2006 meeting dates are: June 21, August 23, October 18 and November 22 or 29 which will include a Christmas party shared by The Gap 1 NHW. Meetings start at 7.30pm and last one hour. The committee comprises: Area Coordinator, Zone Coordinators, Treasurer, Secretary and Newsletter Editor. The Police Liaison Officer brings members up to date with the crime-fighting situation in The Gap and gives any necessary security advice. The objective of the state NHW, in support of Queensland Police, is to reduce the incidence of preventable crime, assist in the identification of offenders and increase public confidence in the security of persons and property. In other words, putting the neighbour back into neighbourhood. All new residents are welcome to come along to any of the Neighbourhood Watch Meetings. Look forward to seeing you there.

The Gap Ward Office Bucket Mate
As part of our 'Be a Water Mate' campaign we have a range of promotional watering cans that will soon be available for sale (via a voucher scheme) for $3.00. As we already have the Bucket Brigade campaign in place, we have 4 x promotional watering cans for use by the volunteers. The cans are ergonomically designed and carry 4 litres to ensure that there is no risk to the gardeners health. We have stock of the Water Restrictions and Safe Gardening Tips fact sheet. I would recommend that you pick up this fact sheet at The Gap Ward Office. If you would like to be a volunteer for this scheme, please contact Dianne or Deborah or speak to Councillor Geraldine Knapp and we can register your availability.
